Schmalbeck, Schmadebeck, Schmarbeck etc.
While searching for my maternal Grandfathers ancestors, I connected with a distant cousin, Don Schmalbeck. Together we have been searching for any and all information connected to the Schmalbeck Family Clan. Variations of our ancestors name, Schmalbeck, are Schmarbeck, Schmarbuck, Schmaddebeck and Schmadebeck. And I am sure we will come across some more as time goes by.
The Schmalbeck Clan originates in Mecklenburg, Germany. Most of them were considered 'Tagelöhner' or day laborers. They had large families and lived in small villages. So far we have identified the following communities:
Hof Hagen, Nieder Steffenshagen, Heiligenhagen, Lebbin, Gustaevel, Rethwish and Poppentin. As time goes by, we will find more. We are sure of that.
We have transcribed some of the 1819 Mecklenburg Censes for these communities and linked them to this page. All you have to do is click on the name of the village and it will take you to those Census Records.
Don found the ship his ancestors used for their trip to the 'Land of Golden Opportunity', the John Bertram.
I have found the ship that carried my Grandfathers Great-Aunt to New York, SS Borussia. Once she disembarked the ship, she was gone without a trace.
